UKVCAS Appointment Unavailable: What to Do Next

If your UKVCAS booking calendar shows no appointments, you have not done anything wrong and your application is not lost. Slots are released on a fixed pattern, free appointments run out in busy areas, and you have several routes: check again at the release times, widen your search to other service points, pay for a chargeable slot, or, if time is running short, get a solicitor to manage the problem. This guide sets out each route in the order most people should try them.

TL;DR

  • UKVCAS shows about four weeks of appointments and adds a new date every day, 28 days ahead, so checking again later often works.
  • Free appointments are released at 9:00 am and chargeable ones at midnight, according to UKVCAS.
  • You can look at other service points, or pay for out-of-hours, weekend, next-day or same-day slots if your case is urgent.
  • Do not cancel your application just to find a slot: withdrawing can put your permission to stay at risk.
  • If a deadline is close, speak to a regulated immigration solicitor before it passes, not after.

Why UKVCAS shows no appointments

UKVCAS is the service that collects biometrics and supporting documents for most applications made from inside the UK. GOV.UK says you will usually need to use it when applying for a visa, settlement or citizenship, and that you will be told if you must when you apply.

An empty calendar usually has one of four causes:

  1. Demand in your area. Service points in and around large cities fill quickly, particularly for free slots.
  2. The release pattern. The calendar only shows four weeks. A date appears when it reaches 28 days away, so there is nothing to book beyond that window.
  3. Your search settings. You may have selected a single service point, one day of the week, or a time of day.
  4. Periods of change. When the commercial partner for in-country applications moved from Sopra Steria to TLScontact on 15 October 2024, GOV.UK warned that availability might be limited for a short time. That notice has since been withdrawn, but it shows that shortages can follow operational changes.

A search result that talks about a phased re-opening of a service or a blocked TLS account is usually about a different system (overseas applications, or a past disruption). Make sure you are using the booking link you were sent after you applied, not a search result.

When UKVCAS releases appointments

This is the most useful detail for anyone staring at an empty calendar. UKVCAS states that its booking calendar shows four weeks of appointments, with a new date added daily at 28 days in advance. It also says it currently releases free appointments at 9:00 am and chargeable appointments at midnight.

In practice:

  • Log in just before 9:00 am on a weekday and refresh. Free slots, including any that have been cancelled and returned to the pool, are most likely to appear then.
  • If you are prepared to pay, check after midnight for chargeable slots.
  • Check daily for a week rather than once. UKVCAS advises applicants who find nothing to log in again on a later date, because new appointments are added daily.

The times can change, so treat the UKVCAS homepage as the current authority rather than any forum thread.

Step-by-step: what to do when no slot appears

1. Check your account and search settings

Log in to your UKVCAS account and clear every filter: choose all service points, any day, any time. Confirm that you are looking at the booking for the right application, particularly if you are applying as a family and each person books separately.

If you cannot get into your account at all, UKVCAS says to contact it through its website and select “No appointment confirmation / access code” as the enquiry type.

2. Look at other service points

The nearest centre is often the busiest. UKVCAS lets you review the list of service points and choose a different location. GOV.UK confirms you can travel to a different visa application centre with free appointments, but you pay your own travel costs.

Weigh the cost honestly. A train fare and a day off work may be cheaper than a chargeable slot, or it may not. If the free slot is three hours away and you need to be back for a shift, the maths changes.

3. Know what free actually means

According to GOV.UK, most visa application centres offer free appointments within 5 working days, though in some locations a standard appointment may cost £76.50. Fees and availability change, so confirm the figure on that page before you pay.

4. Consider a paid appointment

GOV.UK says you can pay extra for out-of-hours or weekend appointments, and for next-day or same-day appointments if your application is urgent. Whether this is worth it depends on what is at stake:

Your situation Sensible approach
No deadline, flexible dates Keep checking free slots at 9:00 am and at other service points
Visa expiring in a few weeks Widen your search, then consider a chargeable slot
Job start date, travel or a course depending on the outcome Book the earliest paid slot and consider a priority decision service
Visa expires within days, or has already expired Take legal advice immediately

5. Understand when processing starts

The delay matters because the clock does not start until you complete identity checks. GOV.UK’s processing times guidance (last updated on 9 September 2026) says UKVI starts processing your application once you verify your identity and submit your documents, either through the ID Check app or by attending a UKVCAS or support service centre appointment. Each week without a slot is therefore a week added to your wait.

If you have already finished that step and your case is taking longer than the published times with no contact from UKVI, the same guidance says you should contact UKVI.

Do you need a UKVCAS appointment at all?

Not always, and this is worth checking before you spend money on a slot. GOV.UK notes that some applicants, such as those with an expired BRP or who have previously provided biometrics, and some Skilled Worker or Student applications, may not need a UKVCAS appointment. Many in-country applicants now verify their identity with the ID Check app instead.

Routes for confirming UK visa applicant identity

Your application confirmation tells you which route applies to you. If it is unclear, do not guess: a wrong assumption can leave an application stalled. Our guide to the visa application centre process explains how the different centres fit together, and our article on the biometric appointment and urgent visas covers what to do when time is short.

Changing, cancelling or missing an appointment

Once you do find a slot, protect it. The rules are strict.

On the day, you can only be seen if you have an appointment. If you cannot bring your passport or travel document, GOV.UK advises you to contact UKVI for help before the appointment. Gather the rest of your paperwork in advance using our urgent visa documents checklist.

Should you withdraw and reapply to get a slot?

This is a common idea in forums, and it is risky. GOV.UK explains that you can only cancel an application while you are still waiting for a decision, that you cannot stop a cancellation once UKVI has received it, and that if you are in the UK you may lose your permission to stay. Fees you get back depend on how far your application has progressed.

If you are on a visa that is about to expire, withdrawing could leave you without lawful status and with a new application fee to pay. Never do it without advice from an immigration solicitor. Errors in an application are a separate source of delay, and our piece on why visa errors cause delays shows what to check before you submit anything again.

If you spotted a mistake in an application you have already submitted, ask a solicitor before you change or withdraw anything. The right fix depends on the visa route and the stage the application has reached.

Should you withdraw and reapply to get a slot? — overview diagram

Most people find a slot within days. The cases that need a solicitor are those where the delay collides with something fixed:

  • Your current leave expires before you can give biometrics.
  • You have a job offer, sponsor licence start date or course start that depends on the result.
  • You need to travel for an emergency and your passport is tied up.
  • You have been sent a request to attend biometrics by a stated date and cannot meet it.
  • A previous refusal means you cannot afford another mistake.

In these situations, the useful step is a conversation about your leave position, the timing of your application and the evidence that explains why you could not attend sooner. A solicitor can also tell you whether a priority or super priority decision service is worth paying for, which our article on expediting a UK visa compares in detail, and how the different types of same-day help work.

Our perspective

We see this problem at the worst possible moment: the application is submitted, the fee is paid, and the applicant finds the next step blocked. Most of the distress comes from not knowing whether the delay is dangerous. Usually it is an inconvenience. It becomes dangerous when leave is close to expiring, and that is the point at which people tend to try risky fixes such as withdrawing the application.

Our advice is simple. Check the release times, widen your search, and pay for a slot if the cost is small compared with what the delay would cost you. If your leave runs out within weeks, or you have a decision that cannot wait, get advice from a solicitor the same day. At MNS Solicitors, every enquiry is handled by a qualified solicitor from the start, not passed to a trainee, and we publish our fixed fees so you know the cost before you decide. Our crisis submission guide sets out how we approach applications where time has nearly run out.

FAQ

How often are new UKVCAS appointments added?

A new date is added every day, 28 days in advance, so the calendar always shows about four weeks. UKVCAS says free appointments are released at 9:00 am and chargeable ones at midnight. Check at those times and keep checking over several days.

Can I get a same-day UKVCAS appointment?

Only if your application is urgent and you pay for it. GOV.UK says you can pay extra for next-day or same-day appointments, as well as out-of-hours and weekend ones. Free same-day slots are not something to rely on.

Can I change my UKVCAS appointment?

Yes, but you must cancel the existing booking in your UKVCAS account and then book a new one. A £10 administration charge applies if you cancel more than 48 hours ahead. Within 48 hours, the appointment cost is not refunded.

Can I withdraw my application if I cannot find an appointment?

You can only withdraw while awaiting a decision, and GOV.UK warns that cancelling can cost you your permission to stay in the UK. Withdrawing will not give you a faster slot. Speak to an immigration solicitor before you cancel anything.

Do I definitely need a UKVCAS appointment?

Not always. Some applicants who have already given biometrics, or who are on certain routes such as Skilled Worker or Student, may not need one. Your application confirmation tells you what you must do.
